Happy Father's Day

With Father's Day just around the corner, we thought this would be a good time to look back and find out a little bit more about its origins and why we celebrate this day. After all you cannot have a Mother's Day and not have a Father's Day to.

The idea of a Father's Day actually originated in America and became official in 1966. Some of the details however have been disputed, but it is agreed that support for an official day began about 100 years ago.

Two accounts exist, both claiming to have thought of a Father's Day. Some believe that a woman called Sonora Dodd, from Washington, came up with the idea. It is claimed that one day after hearing a Mother’s Day sermon in 1910, she wondered why there was not a day to celebrate Fathers. Sonora's mother had died in childbirth and she and her siblings had been brought up by her father.

With the support of the local YMCA and the Ministerial Association of Spokane, Sonora began her campaign to have the day officially recognised.

That same year in the city of Spokane the first Father's Day celebration was held. Soon other towns and cities across America followed suit.

However the second account states that a woman named Grace Golden Clayton, from Fairmont, West Virginia, suggested a day for celebrating fathers in 1908. She had the idea after a mine explosion in a nearby town killed more than 360 men. She thought that such a day would help the miners children come to terms with their loss and help them to celebrate the lives of their fathers.

I think we can agree that no matter the origins of this day, it is a special time to show the father figure in your life just how much they mean to you. A time to show how much you love and appreciate them and everything they do for you.
