About us

Paul Hodgkiss Designs is a family run business based in Glasgow, Scotland.  We are a creative Scottish company that has built a reputation for beautiful distinctive hand crafted furniture and fittings, designing interiors for both commercial and residential customers.

In 1986 two things happened; I met my now wife, Elvera and I sort of accidentally set up in business.

I say 'accidentally' because that was how it happened.  I started designing and creating during my Cabinetmaking apprenticeship.  Once finished I had already built a small reputation and the demand was such that I had to get a workshop, machinery and lots of help.

Elvera meanwhile between encouraging and wonderfully distracting me, was running a home, gifts and accessories shop in Glasgow with her mum.

My commissions got bigger and bigger; restaurants, bars and clubs, public buildings, kitchens and interiors.  Elvera came to help, we worked side by side in both the workshop and office.  This was the beginnings of the Paul Hodgkiss Designs team, some of the best, talented craftsmen came to join me along with highly specialised contractors all of whom to this day, never cease to amaze me.

It was 1994 when I established what is now our trademark design, we developed my designs to create a range of furniture for the home, the natural progression was home accessories.

In 2000 we opened our Bumblebee shop, Elvera created a beautiful lifestyle shop in our 200 year old sandstone cottage, designed and fitted out keeping all the charm and atmosphere.  Elvera sources from all over Scotland, Europe, America and Australia to find designers and makers of beautiful everything's that makes your home, well, just magic.

Then....in 2009 we started what was to be an epic 4 years of restoration to a run down Victorian building in Glasgow's Southside.  We knew it had to be the building to showcase my furniture designs.  I should mention that two small people had joined our family by this time, Finn and Ollie, our wonderful boys who without knowing, helped and inspired us through the enormous challenge that we faced.  Elvera set to work sourcing yet more amazing finds, this time with the opportunity to extend to lighting, throws, furniture and much more.  The result is a stunning experience of interior possibilities for everyone.

The new space has allowed me to design and produce both our furniture and accessories ranges 'for sale' as opposed to commission, my goodness!  This has brought lots of designs and ideas to the surface......what fun!

I continue to love the commissions that steadily flow, from singular pieces to entire interiors for both domestic and commercial interiors.  In 2014 I was asked to design medal trays, Quaich's and Podiums for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, it was a huge success and a legacy of pride for my team and colleagues.

All my designs and Elvera's finds are true to our commitment to design and product quality that we know will bring you enjoyment and satisfaction, we know that the purchase experience is a huge part of the enjoyment.  If you are buzzing then so are we.
